Hey guys,

How are things?  Tomorrow we’ll be restarting our College Bible Study at 6pm at church.  Anyone from our EM is welcome.  Afterwards, we will have dinner and fellowship at our house.  Here’s today’s devotion:

Thurs, Jan 19th – Genesis 22

How do you know if someone really and truly love you?  Now you can’t know for sure but a person’s actions are a good indication of their affection.  We would see in all areas of life.  Words are meaningful but they lose their meaning if they’re not accompanied by action.  In one of the most memorable stories in all of Scripture, God would call Abraham to sacrifice his own and only son.  Now why would God want Abraham to do this?  Was God jeolous of the love that he had for his son?  This would be the ultimate test for Abraham.  Could he give up what he cherished the most for his Lord?  He and his son would take a three day journey more than enough time for Abraham to change his mind but he would press on.

He would take Isaac, lay him on the altar and start the motion to sacrifice him and God would tell him to stop.  Now one thing that I’ve always wondered.  Would Abraham really have fulfilled the deed?  Maybe he would start the motion but stop just short of plunging the knife into his son.  But the Lord knows our very thoughts and intentions and God obviously knew that if he wasn’t stopped, Isaac would have been sacrificed.  Whenever I read this story, I can’t even begin to imagine what it would be like to be in Abraham’s shoes.  I think it was even harder b/c Isaac was able to speak and ask what was going on.

For those of us who know this story well, we know that the story doesn’t end there.  B/c the ultimate reason for this act was that God would show us by action, His love for us by sacrificing His one and only Son.  God would show us that there was no cost too great when it would come down to His children.

Take care guys and hope to see you all soon.

Blessings,
P. Ben
