Hey everyone,

How are things?  It was definitely different being away this weekend.  Being away has its benefits but we really miss our family in Denver.  A reminder that if you haven’t filled our your survey yet to please do so by this Wed.  Here’s today’s devotion:

Mon, Jan 9th – Genesis 11

Ever since we were little, we would play the comparison game.  We wanted to see who was the fastest, smartest, tallest, prettiest, etc.  It’s an innate part of humanity and in some ways there is nothing wrong with it.  However when we allow that desire to become a means to place ourselves above the Lord, then it becomes a colossal problem.  Today we read about the story of Babel where all the people had gathered to build a tower that reached up to the heavens.  That in and of itself wasn’t a problem but it was the heart behind it.  Their intentions weren’t to show off their engineering expertise but to reach up to the Lord to dethrone Him.  The Lord would confuse the languages and scatter the people.

This is a sharp reminder that we need to realize that we must utilize our gifts to honor the Lord and exalt Him.  Whenever we take a gift that has been given to us and use it for our own gain, pleasure or glory, we dishonor the Lord and fall into the same trap that the people at the tower did.

But one of the most beautiful aspects of the Word is how the Lord is able to use these stories of tragedy and turn them into triumph.  When God’s work of redemption would be completed in Christ, He would take all of His people with their languages and give them one language of worship.  Instead of scattering it would be about gathering.  This is the way that God would work in the midst of His people.

Have a great week guys and God bless!

P Ben
